Throughout my own practice and research
I have been fond of ‘using’ tools to design.
An important question herein lies what
we can define as a tool? I started defining
a combination of both tools and techniques, which results in a first answer to this question.
‘A mechanical device intended to make a task easier’ and ‘the practical aspects of a given art, occupation, etc.’
This combined definition already gave me a vast toolbox of things I can use, and want to learn how to employ in my own practice.
Here I use to ‘employ’ not as in opening
a specific software to create the design,
but rather finding a tool that already has
a profounder relation to the subject
I am trying to convey to the reader.
Sometimes the tool itself is the subject.

I focus on learning new techniques/
gaining a more thorough understanding
of those already present in my toolbox.
A way to gain better grip on my design practice rooted in a connection between
tools and implementation — a digital ying
and yang. My master research as a further
exploration of these links.
